Wind Ensemble/ Grade 4/ 4'

Gustav Mahler was born in Kalischt, Vysočina Region, Czech Republic on July 7, 1860, and died in Vienna, Austria on May 18, 1911. Mahler wrote the poems and composed the music for the Songs of a Wayfarer in 1883. The first performance of the song cycle was given in Berlin in 1896 by the Dutch singer Anton Sistermans.  Music from the songs were used as the basis for Mahler's First Symphony. This transcription features only the first of the four songs featured in the original "Songs Of A Wayfarer." Both words and music of the songs suggest the simplicity of the folk song, and the romantic quality of the music is well matched to the romantic character of the text with its theme of a lost love

When my love's happy wedding day comes,
It will be a sad day for me!
I will go to my dark little room!
Weep, Weep! Over my dear love!

Little blue flower, do not wither!
Sweet little bird, singing in the green heath!

Ah! How beautiful is the world!
Zikueth!

Do not sing. Do not bloom!
Spring is passed!
All song is now stopped!
At night when I go to sleep,
I think of my sorrow!
