Overture / For 6 Trombones / Approximately 4' 30"
With Sword and Crown
With Sword and Crown is an original composition voiced for 6 trombones by Michael Cotten. The music serves as an homage to Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky was a brilliant, Romantic era composer who often wrote about how he felt he was constantly fighting a dark, oppressive fate. In the 4th symphony, Tchaikovsky open’s with a musical motif he referred to as the “fate” motif. With Sword and Crown opens with a fanfare that is the composer's version of the fate motif. It is from this material that the rest of the composition uses as a foundation and to draw inspiration from. The title came from the idea of kings waging war with the victor seeing it as their fate to conquer and rule.
The recording is of the University of Kentucky Trombone Octet under the direction of Brad Kerns.
